8rae, a Filipino American artist out of Orange County, has been an artist for only about a year and a half - but considering his family dynamic, it seems as if he was always destined.
“I grew up around music and always had a love for it. My dad was a musician and my mom was a dancer so I was always around music”
This informal conditioning, of sorts, positioned 8rae as an artist that understands the value of genuine expression and possesses the versatility required to experiment with new sounds. This makes for a fun, and often unpredictable, experience for listeners - yet, one that brings audiences closer due to the personal nature of his records. This is by design, though, as 8rae's goal has always been to make music relatable for his fans - evidenced by his recent singles “Lost Cause” and “Panalo”.
Following the release of his full-length project “The 8” in 2020, an exhibition of 8rae’s sonic landscape, they have maintained a steady presence - dropping an EP and over a dozen singles since. But, according to 8rae, his new singles are his favorite “by far”, specifically “Lost Cause” - a personal exploration of a complex relationship. Against the backdrop of an infectious and hyper-pop production, 8rae grieves a relationship deprived of the reciprocity needed for success, realizing that the disconnect between them and their partner is too vast to repair.
“Panalo”, sonically and lyrically, has a completely different feel than “Lost Cause” - more boastful and confident in approach. It’s less reflective and more forward-thinking, steeped in his growth artistically, and an acknowledgment to all that doubted 8rae’s ability to succeed musically. From what we’ve heard from 8rae so far, I think it’s safe to say that his future is bright and that he’s here to stay. So what’s next for the Orange County artist? He’s confirmed the release of another EP in October, and has announced another project for 2023, so 8rae’s fans have some exciting releases to look forward to!
