aftrr! is working hard within the bounds of hyperpop and is ready to take it to the next level. The 20 year old So-Cal artist has hit the ground running with 10 releases this year, and his latest collaboration, half evil, featuring reefuh, is accelerating his career even further. This isn’t aftrr’s first collaboration with reef, as the two have worked together on multiple songs in the past. Aftrr explains, “When first making the beat my goal was to make a song where I just reply rap and say punchlines, and I knew that someone like reef would be perfect for it.” After the back and forth the two were able to finish writing the lyrics in an hour. “The song was actually originally going to be a cypher with multiple people on it, but I thought it'd be more interesting if me and reef just went back and forth on the beat because I think we match really well.” With aftrr’s friend, miracle on the drums, the high speed track takes off.
aftrr finds himself drawing inspiration from more rap centered artists like cheromani. half evil and it’s beat are inspired by two of cheromani’s more popular songs, agenda and euphoria. “Both [songs] have very unique production for a rap song, so that was my main influence when first making the beat.” A higher tempo approach with a stressed out production style comes together to create the final product for aftrr! and reefuh. In the opening line, aftrr starts with the lyric, “born in 02 but I’m still 1 of 1”. aftrr has the catalog to show he is that unique, jumping from the overlapping cadence of half
evil, to the distorted, yet euphonic track, out of spite.
We should anticipate this dynamic duo to collaborate again, “I have a big song [with reef] that I can hopefully drop around summertime”. Aftrr! also hints at future music with the collective gunrange, as well as other friends. With the growth seen on Soundcloud and Spotify, it’s easy to see aftrr is well establishing himself in the hyperpop community.
