Want to stress the hell out of your romantic partner and throw them into a frenzy? Text them the three magic words, “Can we talk” and watch the madness unfold. That conversation can go two ways: either kind of bad or very bad. No positive outcome will come from this interaction.
Attempting to convey this feeling into a song, Los Angeles-based music duo, Ruby Rose put together their emotional new single, “Can We Talk”. This is the pair's first release since the summer when they dropped their genre-bending EP, Saboteur. It's unbelievable that the two members, Daniel Laner & Fernando Fine, continue to find new ways to evolve their sound. Their newest release is just another instance of them refusing to be complacent thanks to their synergy.
“I was dreading having the “What are we?” talk with someone. Too many times I've gone into that conversation thinking we’re on the same page, only to find out I've been reading the book upside down.” - Fine on “Can We Talk”
Despite their individuality, they work best when they are playing to their strengths. Fine steps up to the plate, by letting his mellow vocals gradually paint a gloomy illustration of how things are going. Pacing himself over the acoustic production, the more exposition he gives, the more we realize that this will be far from a happy ending.
As someone who drives a lot, this is one of those songs ideal for late-night highway cruising. It's not too fast so that you can still sit with your thoughts and not get mentally off-track. Near the end, I just might open the sunroof to be dramatic and feel the full effect of the epic guitar solo on my spirit.
I don't think Ruby Red ever has to feel like they have to compete with anyone else. Their music is in a lane of its own, with no one ahead of them. Continuing to ride that wave of fearless making music, I don't see them slowing down.
