Anderson Hao, a 22-year-old artist hailing from a small town near Columbus, Ohio, has been rapidly making her mark. Currently residing in West Hollywood, LA, Anderson's journey from a somewhat isolated upbringing to finding her voice and community in the bustling music scene is nothing short of inspiring.
Having moved out at the age of 18, Anderson initially explored various paths before realizing her passion for songwriting. The pivotal moment came in 2021 when she started writing full songs, and in 2022, she relocated to New York, dedicating six months to intensive songwriting. It was during this period that she crafted an amateur EP, catching the attention of her current partner and producer, propelling her into the Harcourt Paloma collective – a tight-knit group of musicians that Anderson now considers her musical family.

Anderson's latest project, "Mom I'm a Popstar," emerged during the finalization of her previous work, "What a Hard Winter!" Collaborating with friends Griffin Chaney and Summer Roman, the project took shape in Griffin's parents' studio in Santa Monica. The album, created in two studio garages in LA, serves as a poignant time capsule, reflecting Anderson's existential and introspective journey during its creation.
A standout track from the album is "Blip," a song she wrote alone in 2022. It holds special significance for Anderson, embodying catharsis and a sense of letting go. The album itself captures the essence of her emotions at the time, making it a unique and personal endeavor.
In terms of influences, Anderson draws inspiration from the likes of The Postal Service and Jenny Owen Youngs, with a nod to her upbringing attending Taylor Swift shows and following bands on tour. She acknowledges the impact of media and art consumption on one's creative output but prefers leaving room for individual interpretation.
Outside of music, Anderson describes herself as someone who cares deeply about her craft. Her newfound joy is her dog, with whom she goes on trail runs and hikes. Previously a preschool teacher, she cherishes spending time with former students and their families, engaging in visual art, and reading.
When reflecting on her journey, Anderson shares advice she wishes she could give her younger self – not to worry too much about the "how" of getting to the next place, emphasizing the magical unpredictability of time. With a bonus track on the horizon, collaborations with her band California Emo, and a third project in the works for the end of May, Anderson Hao is poised for a busy and exciting year ahead!
