Jay Atlas is another one of our own Floridians, coming by way of Miami, but born and raised just outside of New York. His parents had high hopes for him, on track to pursue the "normal life" as they say it, crunching numbers and doing finances, but now he's on the hunt to run up the digits and get his music in the ears of many, since he's developed this burning passion for music.
He was raised on the pop radio hits of the early 2000's, but started to fall in love with hip-hop and some of its offerings. He appreciated the likeness of lyricists like Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole, but also really enjoyed the uproar of the SoundCloud generation and the underground scene. "As someone who led such a seemingly normal life there was something about the subject matter and emotions behind [my] favorite hip-hop songs that resonated with me."
When in high school, he began freestyling with his friends, like many humble beginnings, and got a hold of FL Studio, mixing and making beats. From there he started writing songs to his own tracks, and the rest was history.
He's got a single currently out on SoundCloud, he dropped July 16, by the title of "Paper Cha$e". The single is hard-hitting though; I dig the rather chilling beat, with bells and other arrangements. Atlas very much gives off $uicideboy$ vibes, with his grunge overcast on the hip-hop outlook. "This track has a gritty, heist inspired sound to it", Jay said and the track was also mixed by Jay, himself.
Towards the start of 2021, Jay decided to take music much more serious having realized again, that it was something that he was truly passionate about. Over the course of this year thus far, Jay has spent time trying to define his sound, writing and recording songs almost daily. Atlas received a co-sign on one of his unreleased songs from Erick the Architect, one of the three members of huge collective, Flatbush Zombies, on a live stream event--another group, I'd like to say he draws similarities to.
Since then he has continued working and innovating, claiming that this is only the warm-up and he "has big things planned for the next few weeks", but expect great things from this kid in the coming months.
Check him out & run up "Paper Cha$e"!
