Artist Highlight: Juniper

Juniper is a dynamic trio made up of Scott Johnson (vocals/guitar), Alejandro Marin (drums), and David Sessions (lead guitar). Hailing from Boston, MA, and Rochester, NY, the band formed a bond through a shared love for music as a way to process life’s experiences. Growing up, each member used music as a means of survival. A way to connect with emotions, navigate challenges, and ultimately share their stories. Their collective journey began in 2017 as a high school cover band, and what started as a passion project has since evolved into a significant pursuit.

The band officially solidified its lineup after Scott and Alejandro met during their first day of college and quickly became inseparable. By 2018, Alejandro had joined Juniper as the drummer, and the two began crafting original songs together. During the COVID pandemic, they took the opportunity to focus on their music full-time, releasing their debut album "Distance Keeps Me Distant" in 2021. After meeting David Sessions through a mutual friend, Juniper’s sound became more refined, and the trio embarked on studio sessions and tours that deepened their creative bond. Today, Juniper is not just a band, its a creative outlet that allows the group to make sense of the world by channeling their collective experiences into music.

Their latest single, "Wasted Time," explores the constant pressure in the music industry to always be productive and produce something new. In a culture where hustle is celebrated, Juniper took a step back to reflect on the value of pausing and taking a break. The song questions the idea of “wasted time” and challenges the notion that taking a moment to breathe is counterproductive. Recorded at RareRoom Studios in Nashville with producer Logan Gladden, the single captures the band’s newfound creative freedom and inspiration from their surroundings. The production process was a vibrant exploration of new sounds, allowing Juniper to evolve their artistry in an environment where creative expression thrives.

Juniper’s influences are as wide ranging as their sound, drawing inspiration from bands like Coldplay, Wilderado, and COIN, alongside artists like John Mayer and Bruno Major. These influences blend together to create a sonic palette that reflects both the band’s personal tastes and their desire to connect with listeners on a deep emotional level.

Outside of music, Juniper is passionate about environmental causes, mental health, and gun reform, reflecting their commitment to making a positive impact beyond their art.

As Juniper continues to grow, one of their most meaningful moments so far was realizing the power their music has to change lives. Whether through personal breakthroughs or moments when fans share how their songs have impacted them, these instances reaffirm why they chose this path. Looking back, they would tell their younger selves to always surround themselves with people who lift them up and to take time for gratitude. It’s not just about chasing success but finding joy in the journey and staying connected to what matters most.
