Artist Highlight: Kevin Powers

Soul is no stranger to the South, or good music for that matter, which is convenient because this hip-pop savant personifies all of the above. North Carolina's GarageBand graduate, Kevin Powers continues to surge across media for his slick lyricism and congruous voice. Powers possesses a youthful energy in their music that exudes raw emotions and vulnerability, much like prior artists have successfully done, capturing hearts and charts alike. His melodic approach to rap and singing seamlessly blends heartfelt lyrics with punctuating beats, creating an intimate connection with listeners.

His collaboration early last year with respected MC , BigBabyGucci, on the track "Company" caught the attention of many, plus the attributing video of the duo directed by @KosmicShots. Their one, two punch proved undeniable as they went on to put out the vibrant track "GOOD 4 NOW", featured on the namesake title of Kevin's debut EP. He's since continued to link up with some notable artists and hopefully, soon to be collaborators in Lil Mosey and KillJasper.

Drake being his biggest inspiration musically, Kev certainly has his sights set far and high. Thoughtfulness can slip into a thought of the past for some creatives and artists alike, but his music is meticulously bundled (so maybe he has taken a few pages out of Drake's book). "Walked In" has amassed over 15-million streams on Spotify, as well as a number of other songs of his amounting to great success. He checks all the boxes of a star, mainly the quality of music and I believe his awareness is what sets him apart. Knowing what's in, what works, and what won't will surely take him far places.

Crossing his "T's" and dotting his "i's", "Checklist"––a film-like production with steady cadence throughout–– is his most recent exemplification of the previous notion. The brassy beat and Powers pair together like a wink and a smile. It's a beautiful thing too, when a song formulates organically and comes out as good as so, as Kevin discussed the inception stemmed from a lengthy conversation with a friend: "He kept reminding me to be thankful of everything I had even though I wasn’t where I wanted to be. That conversation really stuck with me so I made the record about it."

Another noteworthy tidbit is his "March 4th Freestyle" on SoundCloud, as he absolutely coasts on the woozy beat. More music is on the way he tells as he looks to continue his upward progression in the industry. On deck is his latest previewed track "Strings" and ideally for him, a "Mixtape before 2024; I promise."
