Artist Highlight: Malik

This week we’d like to highlight, an extremely talented, fellow Midwesterner by the name of Malik. Born and raised in Wichita, Kansas, Malik has always been surrounded by music and taking up instruments since a youngin’.

He draws a lot of inspiration from the likes of artists who have also challenged the intertwining of Pop, Rap, Rock, and R&B, like XXXTentacion & The Weeknd, his favorite artist he notes. I personally sense a lot of Juice Wrld similarities as well, through the beats and songs he sings/raps over.

He’s super melodic and has an ear for what will stick, paired with a great voice and sappy lyricism. All Girls Are the Devil being his most recent project, a pre-pandemic 6 song EP, mostly performed solo. Self-titled song, “All Girls Are the Devil”, has racked in over 700,000 plays off it. Certainly could say that’s contributed to his following of quite a few tens of thousands of monthly listeners. He’s stayed pertinent dropping primarily singles, releasing his track “Glamorous” (probably my personal favorite) in late June.

He’s only worked with a few collaborators because he seemingly likes that his music can curate to him without so much external involvement. Malik actually facilitates the whole production of his music, from start to finish. Beat-making, mixing, mastering, and the vocals, just adding to his expertise and showcasing how talented he is.

As of recently he’s just been juggling instruments, having “just copped a bass”, playing piano, drums, and whatever else he can get his hands on. He has aspirations for the big city of Los Angeles a little down the line, but he’s still holding it down for Kansas, all the same.
