Artist Highlight: MICO

It’s a pleasure to cover the augmented artist that is MICO once more. Some time it's been since we last caught up with the Canadian artist, upon our uncovering of his single at the time, “down!” which has since seen more success as part of his collective of tracks titled second thoughts EP. Now 20, Mico boasts over a half-million monthly listeners on Spotify and is closing in on what he feels he was destined to do.

Growing up he was always pushing the creative, or at least musical agenda at home. While his parents had their distinguished tastes, he grew to enjoy the likes of the pop-punk genre at the time; names like 5 Seconds of Summer & Mariana Trench have etched fond memories in his mind. This explains where fragments of his sound derive, yet and still, he perpetuates the style with a new and refreshing light.

His latest single “cut my hair” details the disoriented-ness of love loss. “Why am I always the one that does the changing?”, he asks throughout the pop-rock enthused track.

“I had a weird feeling it was gonna do well; the same night that I wrote the chorus, I posted it because I thought it had a shot, and it had a little moment, so I was like “shoot, I have to finish this one asap"", he detailed.

Instinctually, he finished the song and sometimes the gut can do no wrong. The track has already surpassed 2 million streams since its inception in late November with no signs of slowing. The instructional music video directed by Marco Muia, showcases the experience surrounding MICO's first show in Toronto, Canada, filled with friends and support all the way up until, before segwaying into the illustrious show.

TikTok too, has been a tool of which he’s seemingly mastered as well, now hosting nearly 500K followers, showcasing his talents to the broader world & debuting snippets. Some important insight I believe he offered when interacting with fans and audiences went like:

“Don't focus on virality as much as you think; posts can go viral, but it's then difficult to build an audience if all you do is algorithm pander. if you're genuinely making content that you enjoy and you're actively talking to your community (posts about things you like vs. all about you, funneling people to discord and twitter, etc), then you genuinely will have people waiting there for your next move.”

Through foresight, success and MICO will become real familiar in the near future, though he's already hit so many breakthroughs. A lot more music was promised as well as some touring in the near future. MICO discussed how important live-performing is to him and why it's so near and dear since he desires to put on a rememberable show. Despite all the pandamonium, he hopes to really get in tune with some of his Philippine culture, which could also provide for some musical thoughts and ideas--maybe even a show there some day?
