In four years time, New York’s latest genre-bending indie pop band has gone from playing at local venues in a small college town to playing under some of the East Coast’s most famous spotlights.
Meet NONEWFRIENDS. and its members: lead vocalist Liz Stuart, guitarist Peter Groppe, bassist Jack Harrington, keyboardist, producer, and engineer Scott Greenblatt, and guitarist and saxophonist Jackson August.
Once a Syracuse University student cover band, the five have been making waves ever since their first foray into original music in 2019.
In fact, since the release of “Already Gone” in December of 2019, the group now sports over 40 thousand monthly listeners and is nearing a million concurrent plays on their Spotify page. Their journey is far from over, however, and after the band’s recent decision to bid a temporary farewell to the city that started it all, it’s clear that their hearts are set on something more.
Their latest single “Love Me” speaks strongly to the group’s potential, marking the first step into NONEWFRIEND.’s reinvented sound.
“Our last release was a big step for us. It was the first release we had that introduced this new sound that we’ve been curating for a while”, Liz Stuart, the band’s lead vocalist, told us. “We have been trying to tap into these upbeat 80’s inspired ‘dancey’ kind of songs”, she continued, quoting influences such as Dominic Fike, Ginger Root, and Remi Wolf among others.
Coupled with the release of a self-produced music video, “Love Me” tastefully infuses elements of funk and R&B while maintaining the group’s signature dreaminess and bedroom pop style. Stuart’s voice, smooth as butter, still manages to demonstrate frustration as she longs for a love interest who refuses to be open with their emotions.
“Why can’t you just love me?”
As the five begin to set their sights on more lucrative endeavors, the slew of releases this year shows no signs of stopping.
NONEWFRIENDS. are set to follow single “Love Me” with “When I Met You”, another venture into the group’s new sound.
“Our next single definitely expands on this [new sound], albeit in a more introspective way. The song is about a relationship that just didn’t work out,” Liz said.
“We were just on different paths at different times.”
The band is also expected to follow “When I Met You”, slated for release on the 12th of May, with two more singles, all of which will be part of their campaign to promote a future EP, which has yet to be teased.
