Artist Highlight: poptropicaslutz!

Punk duo poptropicaslutz! has taken the music scene by storm from their humble beginnings over east, from Long Island, NY. The two have been around each other since elementary, yet didn't quite understand what fate had in store for them until as of relatively recently, when they were introduced through mutual friends. Now, they've accumulated over 60,000+ monthly Spotify listeners with many hits and hundreds of thousands of plays alike.

Recreating nostalgic rock theme songs to the likeness of early 2000's sensations' Linkin Park & Green Day, but modernizing and adjoining their own soul into it. As you all know we appreciate those who can curate their own style, utilizing the pieces of stuff they like. It's super cool to see the diversity of the two shine through, to uniquely create this uniformity and challenge the barriers of the punk and hip hop scenes, as we know, since way back when, they carry a lot of the same derivatives and origins.

Their favorite artist they noted: "It would have to be hellogoodbye. It's a lot of experimental stuff that reminds us of hyperpop and stuff was about 15 years early. It's super cool to hear stuff that came out in 2004, that could hold its own in the current scene." When we asked them, they described themselves saying, "Our genre is primarily pop punk with elements of hip hop and hyperpop".

They've collaborated with our guy aldrch, who we covered a few articles back, pushing the agenda for the hyperpop genre, with songs like the jam "Comingup4air" which I've discussed previously. "It’s always a pleasure to work with our boy aldrch and make something out of the box. We haven't really [done] too much about collabs' with other artists, but typically we work with people who we become friends with, before any talk of making music together. As of now we’ve only done features with artists we’ve genuinely connected with and enjoyed being around, and the music comes after." Keeping things genuine is important to them, as it keeps the music pure. Off that same tape (noOffense.mp3), another song I suggest, "user not found" is super dope with the conventional drums, but those inclusions of rap and the hyperpop elements they promised.

It was a pleasure getting to know the two a bit more and understand how they work, but also what all this means for them and some of the messages they're trying to get across. Their passion is simply how much the music makes them feel, they discussed. "Nothing brings out the purest, most raw emotions like music does. Our inspiration comes from listening to music that influences us or other things like movies/books/pop culture." Clearly they have made an influence of their own, boasting the fan base they do and they're having fun with it. The two spoke to the significance of doing just that saying,"Do what makes you happy; focus on enjoying what you're doing and success will follow."

They have an upcoming EP titled, Just in Case the World Ends, which should come by the end of the year. An idea they said they've had since the inception of the group, so expect something really focalized and exciting! They've also got a show coming up in August, their first ever performance actually. August 19th in Brooklyn at the Knitting Factory. When they're not making hits, some of their favorite things to do passing time include, "...getting halal or Applebees late at night when we're starving and nothing else is open."
