Introducing Reefuh: The Rising Star from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
At only 16 years old, Reefuh is already making waves in the music industry with his unique sound and impressive work ethic. Born and raised in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Reef has always been the new kid in school due to frequently moving around with family throughout the state. However, he managed to use music to break the ice in most situations, which helped him discover new friends.
Reefuh has been making music since he was 14, but it wasn't until he was 15 that he made a concerted effort to take it further. He was drawn to the way music allowed him to express his emotions innovatively, and he paid close attention to how producers sequenced music in movies. Reef's biggest musical influences growing up were Lil Wayne, Young Thug, and more recently 2hollis. But he also picked up on his mother's love of Keith Sweat and his father's fondness for Nelly. These varied influences have subconsciously influenced the way he creates music.
In 2022, Reefuh released 31 singles, which is impressive for any artist, let alone a 16-year-old. When asked about his creative process and if things “come easier”, Reef says he usually punches in when he records and it takes him about 20 minutes to finish his main vocals. While he finds the process of creating music “easy”, he admits to losing motivation from time to time.
So far in the new year, Reef collaborated with PK to create his recent tracks, "the prezi" and "white house." With his first track "the prezi," Reefuh approached PK with the idea to create a beat similar to Caponeti's "bldylngz" for the Switch. After PK was on board with the idea, reef laid down his usual style of rapping and it was a wrap. But his most recent track "White House" was actually inspired by "Crush” by KMOE. reefuh’s unique sound was heavily influenced by the marching band drum fills, which he learned to make sound distinct in his beats. He really wanted to incorporate some outrageous bars on this track, and says he was determined to do so after being on this particular “presidential wave”. Reef even considers "white house" to be one of his favorite tracks created so far.
To the new artists out there, Reef recommends being mindful of how they come across to other artists, avoiding being pushy or eager to show off their music or self-promote in other people's DMs. He also advises against stripping other people's songs and claiming them as inspiration.
Make sure you keep your eyes on Reefuh, with his unique sound and passion for music, he is sure to make even more waves in the industry in the years to come.
