Artist Highlight: Samuel Petra

Encapsulating the spirit of the indie-rock genre, this week's artist highlight showcases a special talent, that is Samuel Petra. It's always a pleasure to cross logistical barriers and tap into artists such as Sam, born and raised in Alicante, Spain. Since he was young, he's fancied the notions of creativity and innovation. Spying a few FL Studio YouTube tutorials, he boasts he never really had inspiration: "Honestly, nothing really inspired me, I found a youtube video of someone using fl studio and I thought to myself, damn, so that’s how people make music, and started. I've always loved creating stuff. When younger I was into visual arts, but when I started making music I couldn't stop." The 21 year old is breaking the ice, familiarizing himself with listeners, with a current following of 18,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.

"Dusty Issues" is the latest offering from Sam, an explanation of the "toxicity" relationships can bring, particularly a short-lived one from his experience. His last project debuted in early October of 2021, Lavanda is a 4-track EP. "Photograph" is arguably the most notable track, what starts as a slow, lo-fi tale and transcends into a fun, catchy track with a Foster, The People feel. Shakes and drums fill the project with nuances of transitions and Sam's guitar of course, to create a refreshing sound.

Floodlight Fever is another great component to identifying Sam's sound. "Too Many Hours" being a personal favorite of my own, but another short, yet great piece of work from early 2021. "Nobody More" is a brilliant visual, utilizing the fish-eye lens and showcasing a spirited array of guitar playing and fireworks, directed by the man himself. There's a few others available on his channel from Lavanda as well, also executed towards excellence.

In his downtime, he enjoys the company of his friends and skating plus the structure of cooking. He doesn't have any collabaration goals at the moment, but would love the opportunity to link with artists " Mike Shinoda, Dijon, or Jean Dawson". Sam leaves the audience with an insightful note: "I would just say try to avoid creating in order to sound likeable, try to surprise yourself. I definitely think that if you understand your message it's easier for people to resonate with It, plus you have more fun." Go stream "Dusty Issues", his latest solo down below!
