Something that is often overlooked in music is the major sacrifices that come with success. Without them, a lot of artists wouldn't be where they are at today, because they'd get derailed by the distractions. If there's one artist who’s never hesitated to prioritize his artistry and not have any regrets is Showjoe. This Virginia-born rapper has made a career for himself by sticking to his guns and consistently elevating his sound.
Before deciding to go full-force with his craft, this former athlete-turned-rapper was once at a crossroads in trying to find the balance between both passions. For most 16-year-olds, music would be the last of their concerns, but Showjoe had different plans in store for himself. The fact he looked up to artists like Lil Uzi Vert or Juice WRLD, there was a high level of expectations that Showjoe had for himself musically, once he realized music was his true calling.
“Lil Uzi Vert was a big inspiration of mine. I was like he’s not dropping, I feel like I can make stuff like this. That was my main idol.” In an era where the majority of the stars are primarily young, it didn't take long for listeners to see the appeal of his vibrant youthful spirit. “So I was like bet, imma start recording my own songs. And then people start messing with it.”
Showjoe’s recent single, “How I Met Ur Mother,” reflects the huge transitional period he is currently in. Stuck between feeling overlooked and underrated, there comes a time in an artist's journey when a breaking point has been reached and something has to give. “How I Met Ur Mother” is not just a song, it's a statement that Showjoe still has a couple of tricks up his sleeve musically.
Now in album mode, we are about to see what direction Showjoe wants to take his sound for his next chapter. Whichever direction he ultimately decides to go, we can count on that it's going to feel fresh and play it safe.
“Excited to give a whole new sound/new frequency to the world, and show what I’ve been working on.” - Showjoe on his recent album WOKEUPWEIRD IN 2002*.
