Artist Highlight: Tommy Richman

Woodbridge, Virginia’s Tommy Richman has captured our attention with his retro style and abundance of projects. Throughout his childhood, he was that kid that was always singing and invested in pursuing music. Following that passion in music, Tommy has been making music since 2016 and moved out to Los Angeles to continue building up his name and following. He explores the world of what he describes his music as, “punk with no meaning but means everything.”

Tommy’s recent solo single “Games” is the third single from his upcoming ep. The song starts out sounding like an 8-bit video game soundtrack. Tommy brings in his vocals, harmonizing beautifully with himself while proclaiming “I don’t know who you are anymore.” In asking how the song was made, Tommy states it was “while [his] mother was doing laundry in the basement.” The cover art cheekily references that with the bubble graphics. The fast pace and vibrant song, “just feels like a bright time” not to quote the song.

The recent collaboration with mynameisntjmack, Tommy and him create “BUNKER/PREROLL” which is a laid back, almost dreamy song that discusses insecurity and wanting to change yourself. The two artists easily work off each other and come together in the chorus. “Bunker was made at Jmack’s crib in Newport News. Kinda a wicked neighborhood but the place looked cool.” Working with other Virgina artists seems to be important to Tommy as he wants to highlight and bring up other artists from his home state. We think that Tommy and mynameisntjmack sound significant together and would love to see more collaborations in the future!

Inspired by the likes of Kanye West, Jean Dawson, Playboi Carti, and BigBabyGucci, Richman wears his inspirations on his sleeve. He highlights BigBabyGucci, the up and coming artist that he really wants to work with in the near future. However, the real inspiration for Tommy can be drawn from his real life experiences, which are often the muse for his songs.

Tommy ends with a single word, “ALLIGATOR” to look forward to later this year. “I just wanna put out cool shit and if people like it then cool.” He certainly is continuing to push himself and bend what the definition of cool is to him and others. We cannot wait to see what other songs and collaborations he’ll produce and can’t wait to discover what ‘ALLIGATOR’ means for him!
