Artist Hightlight: Jimi Somewhere

23 year old artist and producer Jimi Somewhere creates unique, nostalgia-inducing ballads and offers something for everyone in his music catalog as a Norway native. Constantly driven with the urge to create, that spark in the music field is what excites him most as he reminisces on how he wrote his first song with his childhood best friend at 8 years old.

Jimi’s recent single, “Tears ‘06,” is a new version of a song that was featured on his 2021 debut album, Nothing Gold Can Stay. The original version of the song, “Tears, 2016” is slower and more distorted, with an eerie intro and sleepy yet sad vocals. In the new version, the difference in energy is instantly noticeable. The guitar sets the precedent for a more upbeat, elevated tune even though the lyrics have the same melancholy sadness. “It's been my favorite song off the album and when we had that moment during band practice I just knew I wanted to record it like that as well. Gave the whole song new life because the original is very draining while this feels more uplifting in a way.”

As the 23 year old continues to create remixes and reimagines of songs from his discography he believes, “It’s fun to see what other worlds [his] music could live in.” These remixes and reimagines call for collaboration with other artists, mostly his friends. Collaborations of this kind result in the best projects because of the fun and collective process with a familiar face. An example of his second most recent single, “The World (camoufly Remix),” camoufly reconstructed the song to live in the world of hyperpop. Hyperpop is a world Jimi never felt he would be a part of, but he “[loves] the sound [and] hearing someone else take what we already created and make it into something new and fresh like that is very cool.”

Jimi is inspired by almost everyone as each artist has something different to offer. “When I was younger it was more centered around like a few heroes but as of now I just look to everyone and try to soak in whatever I find interesting.” Jimi wants to take in everything possible there is to learn about music as he reminds himself everyday to, “keep going and practice more on your instruments.”

We can look forward to a bunch of different sounding singles from Jimi this year, as he explores new terrains in music whilst finishing up his second album! Also, keep a look out for a fresh documentary coming soon!
