Discovering Sughn: From Houston Roots to Healing Melodies in 'Running to You'

Sughn, the emerging singer-songwriter, originally hails from San Bernardino, California, but her heart and identity are deeply intertwined with Houston, where she has spent her life from a very young age. Growing up in a tight-knit family of six sisters, Sughn's early life was immersed in the enchanting world of music, nurtured by her single mother's daily serenades. Despite a somewhat sheltered upbringing, her family's creative spirit led to spontaneous songwriting sessions and impromptu dance performances. These cherished family talent shows planted the seeds of her passion for music and performance, even though she initially grappled with shyness. Music swiftly became Sughn's refuge, offering an escape into her boundless realm of imagination.

Sughn's journey into the world of music began at the age of 10, but it wasn't until 2018 that she decided to take her craft seriously. Her inspiration to pursue music professionally stemmed from a desire to heal others through her songs, much like her own musical inspirations had done for her. Her latest single, "Running to You," is a passionate track that was born in the intimacy of her closet studio. This deeply personal song ended up taking two years to complete due to the necessity of traveling to Los Angeles to record and refine its structure. "Running to You" is a reflection of her raw emotions during a challenging period in her life, and it embodies her aspiration to convey heartfelt messages through her music.

Sughn's musical influences have evolved and changed over the years. During her formative years, she drew inspiration from artists like Bon Iver, Daughter, Aaliyah, and Sharon Van Etten. Currently, she finds creative energy in discovering new and emerging artists on platforms like SoundCloud. Despite exploring new sounds, she often returns to the classics, as it can be challenging for her to find inspiration in contemporary music as she did in the past.

Reflecting on her journey, Sughn wishes she could have reassured her younger self with the message that "it's coming, don't worry." Her path into the world of music required a profound transformation, as it split from the path her family had set for her, and it led to an entirely different life from what she was accustomed to.
