Hailing all the way from Atlanta, Jelani Imani is pushing the limits of what it means to be an underground artist. While he may not be the first artist from Atlanta to accomplish this, it's even more impressive that he's doing it on his own terms as opposed to following what's trendy at the moment. Initially beginning his music career as an alternative hip-hop artist, Jelani has recently made the crossover to alternative rock. This ambitious move allows him to forge a new path and completely separate himself from his peers.
“a leg up” marks an exciting new chapter for Jelani as we get to see him reinvent himself in a completely different direction. This 5-track EP truly reinforces the notion that this isn't the same artist from before. It's very apparent that he has taken major strides to reshape how he wants to be viewed, especially in the “alt-rock” space by his raw approach and by incorporating more live instrumentation in his production.
Building off this EP, Jelani is prepping to release a full-length body of work that goes all in for the new era he's stepping into. With influences spanning across multiple decades, his upcoming project hopes to create a sound that he can uniquely call his own.
