Kevin Holliday’s “Expensive Taste” R&B single showcases two sides of a failing relationship

For Kevin Holliday, making music began as a hobby in college. Now, after releasing his EP “OMNI” and playing a few shows, he’s returned to drop his newest single “Expensive Taste”.

Holliday on “Expensive Taste”: “[it’s] about a relationship that is clouded in vanity. I wanted to write it from both perspectives because I like to look at the whole situation… when I’m writing. I think it makes for a more interesting point of view”. The song takes you through a materialistic and explotivate relationship while providing both sides of the story. The groovy 70’s single was created with producers Chasen Smith and Keizo Fish, who Holliday regularly works with. “When we made it, we were specifically channeling ‘Off the Wall’ by Michael Jackson. That's by far my favorite album, so we sat and listened to it a bunch before we even started to make anything. We wanted something with a similar energy that built upon everything I've released until now”. The self proclaimed “King of Pop” isn’t Holliday’s only inspiration when it comes to making music.

Andre 3000, Solange, Daft Punk, Pharrell, and Tyler the Creator, names Gen Z are exceptionally familiar with, are also listed as Holliday’s inspirations. He admires that they aren’t afraid to stand out or push the creative limit. Prince, another artist Holliday is influenced by, is illustrated in the background of “Expensive Taste”’s animated lyric video.

Since its release on January 5th, “Expensive Taste” garnered over 77,000 listens on Spotify.

Outside of the music world, one of Kevin’s favorite hobbies is cooking. And who wouldn’t enjoy cooking? In 2020, everyone was indoors due to a pesky little virus called COVID-19. Many people took the time indoors to brush up on their cooking or baking skills. Holliday enjoys trying new recipes or watching the latest episode of Kitchen Nightmares.

This year, Kevin Holliday wants to officially go on tour as well as play at a few festivals. “I want people outside of my core fan base to experience my music live. I really think live shows are still one of the major elements that convert casual listeners into fans. That's definitely an emphasis for 2022”. And what can fans expect regarding new music? “All of my new music sounds completely different than anything I’ve done before. It takes the foundation I have and really builds on it. I’m excited for people to hear that progression”.
