Klassic Kell's "The Midnight Hour": Atlanta's Emerging Rap Star Shines with Maturity and Style

Culturally speaking, the city of Atlanta has always had a reputation for setting trends. Klassic Kell, an emerging rapper from College Park, GA, recently released his new EP, The Midnight Hour and it might be just one of my favorite listens so far this year.

After being behind the scenes for a while and being able to soak free game from his friends who were already making music, he took it upon himself to test his luck with music. Nonetheless, this decision aged like fine wine, because with every release he seems to evolve his sound to new highs so far in his remarkable 4-year rap career.

With it being a two-year gap since we last heard from Klassic Kell, it is immediately obvious that his sound has matured considerably. I immediately picked up on the fact that his raps are more polished and more concise. Klassic Kell had to say this regarding the project:

“My mindset while making it was to continue honing into creating the sound of Klassic. Digging deeper into what I'm rooted in and giving more.”

If you listen to smooth Southern lyricists like Curren$y and Outkast, it’s wild how you can hear their influence all over The Midnight Hour. For me, the peak of this project has to be the outro track, “Forever Schemin” featuring Jay Worthy, another super slept-on artist. This collaboration is a match made in heaven, as their flows match perfectly over the 80s-influenced cinematic production.

“It was named The Midnight Hour because when I listen to it, I think it sounds best at those cruising hours. The music just reminds me of those hours.”

To continue this momentum, listeners can hopefully expect another project and a plethora of singles from Klassic Kell as he strives to be a more consistent artist.
