mykel online’s refreshing 65 second hyper-ballad “scream and run” will have you hitting repeat

One of the most confusing parts about getting up every day are those weird little moments when your brain is still registering that you’re waking up and you’re almost half of a zombie. There’s something blissful yet also existentially uncomfortable about it, kind of like thinking back on faded memories — happy they took place, sad that you can’t seem to precisely remember every single thing about them. The latest single by the multitalented artist mykel online sounds kind of like those moments. The Miami native, LA-based singer-songwriter, producer, director & visionary has a small catalog to date, but with each release he’s seemed to show how much potential he has.

Produced by Maki Adams and Abner Dennis, “Scream and run” clocks in at just 65 seconds, which has left me and many others catching on early to do nothing but click the “repeat 1” button on Spotify. Where most would zig and probably miss the mark on taking such a bold approach to releasing music, mykel’s zagging in the opposite direction, committed to crafty songs so catchy that the listener is propelled to want to listen to them over and over again. His songwriting process on S&R show flashes of both a professional songwriter and a creative genius. The quick 1:05 verse is mykel rapping through the POV of Leonardo Dicaprio in Inception, during the scene when his chair is falling back into the bathtub. When talking about his creative process, mykel said, “99% of my output is just self-produced in my room. My solo sessions consist of me pacing around the room in a weed-induced mania, singing over a synth / guitar loop I just played. I write on the mic and once I catch a cadence that sounds attractive I’ll run with that, then construct the rest of the beat around the vocals.” The accompanying music video (shot, edited, and directed by mykel) showcases this creative process perfectly, as the video features 3 different mykel’s kind of pacing and sulking around in a beaten down deconstructed house.

Mykel’s short but highly promising catalog also reflects just how versatile of an artist he is. Whether he’s producing his own music, 3D modeling, or coding a video game, he ties it all back into his audiovisual experience that is ultimately a romanticization of the mundane. He’s already shown an extreme amount of vulnerability, touching on subject matter like existential dread and the emotional impact of physical relationships. His last single “vomit!” also features a visual with an animated world designed and executed by mykel himself.

With more releases planned for 2022, including more AMVs, a project with close friend and collaborator Maki Adams, and much more to keep old fans entertained and new fans begging for more. If his early catalog is any indication of the potential and vision mykel online carries, we recommend that you go ahead and tap in now so you can watch it all unfold.
